The darkness surrounds us in multiple ways these days. The Sun is farthest away from the Earth during November and December and at the same time we as citizens of the Earth are being metaphorically dropped to our knees by the inner darkness of humans whose true beliefs are now out in the open for us to see, hear and experience. Blatant racism, xenophobia, Islamaphobia, homophobia and fascist thoughts and words have slowly crept into our everyday lives and threaten to become a new norm. How do we as people of good conscience with loving hearts respond to this new reality?
We all know in our heads and hearts that darkness cannot survive the coming light of Winter Solstice. We watch and wait because we know from centuries of experience that the Earth does turn back toward the Sun and the days will be filled with greater light…the darkness will indeed succumb to the Light of the Sun.
Truth is also that a thousand candles can illuminate the darkest and deepest of tunnels and caves. How do we, in practical terms, shine candlelights in the dark tunnels of despair, hatred, violence, fear and anger permeating our current days?
BE LOVE, BE COMPASSION, BE GRATITUDE, BE KINDNESS, BE LIGHT
Pray, journey to your helping spirits for advice, commit random acts of kindness, give someone a ride, help an immigrant to understand the grocery store, stand up when you see someone being belittled or harassed or harmed in any way, make contributions to the people in the trenches of the dark tunnels to support their work. The ACLU, Planned Parenthood, and the Natural Resource Defense Council are but a few of the many worthy organizations defending our gentle and loving way of life. And then there are the people who are standing up for our right to clean water…help support those who are standing for all of us at Standing Rock. There are many people bringing winter supplies; help them with a donation.
LOVE EVERYONE! THE DARKEST OF HEARTS HAS A BRIGHT SPIRIT WITHIN.
We are not helpless. In the words of FDR, “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.” Do not succumb…BE THE LIGHT…we can be that Thousand Candles!
Happy Winter Solstice!
