As the days shorten and temperatures begin to tumble during evening hours, my heart becomes acutely aware and appreciative of light and the growing shadows. With the Sun approaching its lowest path, deep shadows are cast in the landscapes of the Northern Hemisphere. This rich golden light is a photographer’s haven and balm to the souls of many, including me.
As within/so without! There is no separation. These words describe in simple form the rather complex truth that we are never energetically separate from other living Beings. We live in an envelope and that envelope is called Weather! Our weather is influenced by the amount of sunlight, the temperature of tidal waters, air temperatures, degree of moisture in the air, speed of the wind, the rotation of the Earth on its axis, and the movement of the Earth around the Sun.
Recently I attended a magical primitive skills workshop. It was intended primarily to teach (in this case) women what is now called “survival skills” We learned shelter building, fire building, cooking with utensils found in nature, and lastly but I think most importantly: awareness in nature. Our instructor discussed the effects of nature deficit on society and how many of his students are not comfortable walking around in nature. We did exercises to focus on each of the senses to help us tune into the natural world around us.
The volume of daily discussion about the economy, the state of our country, global warming, and opposing political views, is dizzying for most of us. It can absorb so much of our attention and energy that, I for one, can feel quite depleted by the end of the day if I allow too much of this into my consciousness.
